Performance Analysis

Ahead of our first Coaches' Conversations on Monday 19 July (7pm to 7.45pm) Paul Westgate looks at Performance Analysis. While there are benefits for the coach and athlete, can too much analysis stifle instinct, creativity and freedom in how sport is played? And are we in danger of producing data-driven robots?

Over the last two decades, the analysis of performance in sport has seen a dramatic transformation in both its methods and technologies. What started as shorthand notations with pen and paper, and the coach trusting his or her instinct, has since evolved to advanced computerised systems and technologies that collect vast amounts of performance-related data. It is perhaps not surprising if coaches feel overwhelmed by the amount of statistical information..!
