Creating a Winning Environment

An insightful and interesting conversation with Simon Middleton, Head Coach of the England Red Roses.

Simon is one of the most successful coaches right now. The Red Roses are the current Grand Slam Champions, the World Number one women's rugby team, unbeaten in the Autumn Series including two emphatic wins over the Black Ferns and they are enjoying an unbeaten 18 match winning run!

Simon shared his coaching methodologies and philosophy, and there were lots of takeaways for coaches of all levels. In particular train as you want to play. Simon puts their success and ability to perform accurately under pressure down to the controlled physical pressure practices he introduced. Also, as a coach don't take yourself too seriously and make sure you have the right people around you. As you would expect from a straight-talking Yorkshireman, Simon's keys to success were keep it simple, be accountable, use common sense and work hard.
